Tips for Using the Remote Databases

If you are a resident with a borrower card obtained from a MCLINC library and your barcode does not work make sure that you have entered your barcode number without using any spaces or other characters. If you are not a member of a MCLINC library, click here.

INTERNET EXPLORER 6.x

If you are using Internet Explorer 6.x as your browser -  

1. In Internet Explorer, click on TOOLS
2. Click on INTERNET OPTIONS
3. Click on the PRIVACY tab
4. Move the PRIVACY SLIDER to "ACCEPT ALL COOKIES"
5. Click on APPLY
6. Click on OK
7. This will enable IE 6 to accept POWER Library cookies.  You should then be able to access the POWER Library databases.

NETSCAPE 6.x

If you are using Netscape 6.x as your browser -

POWER Library does not support Netscape 6.x.  Please install a browser that is compatible with POWER Library.

Internet Explorer - Version 4.5 or higher
Netscape - Version 4.5 or higher, but not 6.x

INTERNET EXPLORER OR NETSCAPE VERSIONS 4.5 to 5x

1. Ensure the browser is set to accept all cookies (per-session and permanent)
2. Ensure the browser is set to allow java and javascript

AOL USERS

If you are using an AOL browser:

    1).  Connect to the Internet using AOL
    2).  Minimize AOL
    3).  Open either Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator

SECURITY SOFTWARE

Ensure Fortress, Norton Internet Security or other security software (personal firewall) is not blocking access.

1. Disable your security software
2. Try POWER Library
3. Consult your technician  if you are now able to access the Power Library as your technician will need to adjust the security settings to allow continued access without disabling the security software.

    Why do I Need to Update my Browser?

• Many of the vendors use certain features that enhance their product in terms of performance, functionality and ease of use.
• Older browsers are not capable of performing or displaying many of these functions.  Our vendors recommend that you use a browser that is at least a version above 4.5, but not 6.x.

Where can I get the Newest Version of Microsoft Internet Explorer?

• You can download the newest version of Internet Explorer for free.
• Go to http://www.microsoft.com/IE/

How do I Obtain the Newest Version of Netscape Communicator?

• You can download the newest version of Netscape Communicator for free.
• There are newer versions of the Netscape Browser other than Communicator that are called Netscape 6.x and Netscape 7.x, but due to the formatting and function incompatibilities with some web sites we recommend using Netscape Communicator 4.8.
• Go to http://www.netscape.com/download/archive.html.
• Scroll down and click on the "Versions 4.7x and 4.8".
• For "Release & Language", choose "4.8 English".
• Click on the word "Download" next to the appropriate Operating System..
• If you experience problems downloading Netscape version 4.7x  or 4.8 contact MCLINC @610-238-0580.

PLUG-INS

• The following plug-ins may be required to access and appropriately view some of the information within the POWER Library databases.  Some of these components may already be installed on your machine.  If you click on a link that requires one of these plug-ins, your browser will usually display a message stating that it needs a specific component and may download it automatically.  Only download from this page if you are experiencing problems with a web page that may use one of the following plug-ins.

Viewpoint Media Player           

• Used for:    Grove Music - 3D instrument models
• To Install:  

1. Go to http://www.viewpoint.com/
2. Click on "Download Media Player"

Apple's QuickTime Media Player   

• Used for:    Encyclopedia of Life Sciences - Multimedia
• To Install:  

1. Go to http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download
2. Enter your information and click on "Download Quicktime"

Chemscape Chime plug-in   

• Used for:    Encyclopedia of Life Sciences - Interactive
• To Install: 

1. Go to http://www.mdlchime.com/chime/
2. Click on "Register"
3. Read the Terms and click "I Agree"
4. Fill out the form and click "Register"
5. Click "Close Window"
6. Login to the chime website using your e-mail adding the password that you have set up while registering
7. Click "Download"
8. Select your version and click "Next"
9. Follow instructions on the page

RealPlayer Basic

• To Install:

2. Click of "Realplayer 8 Basic"
3. Fill out the form
4. Click on "Download FREE RealPlayer 8 Basic"
5. Click the radio button for "RealPlayer 8 Basic Minimum"
6. Click of "Download Free RealPlayer Basic Now"

• Used for:  Majority of the documents within POWER Library 
• To Install:
